Across the United States, laws subjecting minor youth to sex offender registration and notification have become increasingly common. Despite their ostensible goal of producing a safer society, such policies may in fact compromise public safety through their impacts on youths’ psychosocial wellbeing. While such collateral impacts are well known to treatment providers and others who work with sexually abusing youth, the extent and nature of these effects have not been adequately documented in the research literature. This research gap has significant implications for those who are engaged in youth advocacy, legal proceedings, treatment, and policy work who regularly confront issues related to juvenile registration.

This webinar will discuss the current public policy and research landscape surrounding juvenile registration and notification, and will examine implications for those engaged in advocacy for legislative reform, those involved in legal proceedings, and those who work with adjudicated youth and their families. The session will also discuss a current national study examining the impacts of juvenile sex offender registration and notification policies on youth and their families, focusing specifically on measures related to youth mental health, school experiences, social relationships, attitudes, experiences of traumatic events, and family impacts.
